Industry - October 5, 200
Summa
Sistemas, wishes to thank all our customers and associates
who honored us with their support, allowing us to be chosen as the
year´s hardware company in the category of:
AUTOMATIC
TELLER MACHINES (ATM)
and
CASH REGISTERS - FISCAL MACHINES
Banco
Mercantil ratifies its trust in SUMMA SISTEMAS.
Banco Mercantil,
one of the most important banks of Venezuela, has recently signed
an agreement to install 428 NCR ATM's; at present the bank counts
with an installed base of 700 ATM's which will amplify to 1128 by
July 2002. Banco Mercantil's ATM's network is one of the most efficient
and recognized in the country.
Banco Mercantil had signed by the end of 1998 an agreement with
Summa Sistemas to provide them ATM's to be installed during the
period 1998-2000.
Reaffirming their satisfaction with NCR products and Summa Sistemas
services' quality, a new and broader agreement to amplify the ATM's
has been signed. This agreement foresees the ATM's network updating,
the incorporation of aditional units, and the possibility of offering
newer and better services, which will contribute to strenghten the
Banco Mercantil's selfservice offer.
It is important to express Banco Mercantil, one of the largest banks
in Venezuela and number one in technology, trust in Summa Sistemas
not only for providing them the 428 ATM's, but for offering the
maintenance to the whole installed base which includes 300 equipments
of other brand.
SELF-SERVICE LEADERSHIP
BANCO MERCANTIL,
leader in the field of technology in both Venezuela and Latin America,
confirms its confidence in SUMMA SISTEMAS extending its installed
base of Checkbook Dispensers
to all its offices.
By means of this equipment
the Bank has automated the function of checkbook deliveries. The
checkbooks are prepared automatically at the moment of being requested
by the customer who may do so at any office of the Bank; this means
a great convenience to the customer as well as a high level of security
and control to the Bank, which can "activate" each check
individually as it is being prepared, in addition to "containing"
costs at being able to prepare only the checkbooks that the customers
request.
In each office each Checkbook
Dispenser is connected to the Banks network, being thus in
condition to access the central computer to validate each request;
based on this validation, the dispensers program prepares
each check and then assembles them, delivering the checkbook in
the format we are all familiar with.
The successful implementation
of a project of this scope requires:
- knowledge of networks
- knowledge of communications
- capacity to interact with
different brands of equipment
- a good product
- maintenance service at national
level
and SUMMA SISTEMAS has proven
to be excellent in each of the above points and has therefore been
chosen for this implementation.
LEADERSHIP IN RETAIL
LOCATEL, a leader company in
the distribution and franchising of medical and pharmaceutical products,
has decided to contract the services of SUMMA SISTEMAS
to implement a total solution
for their pharmacies and franchisees to
organize:
- the central system
- the POS functions in the
pharmacies
- the communication system
among all the stores
The solution comprises an NCR
S26 and an NCR S20 servers for the central office functions, an
NCR S20 as store server with several NCR 7445 POS terminals per
each pharmacy including NCR 7890 scanners, NCR 7141 printers and
several NCR 3272 workstations; the solution also includes the SUPERPOS
application that was being installed previously in other hardware.
LOCATEL has presently 4 owned pharmacies and 3 franchisees and is
planning a steep expansion.
This deal is worth mentioning
because it shows the acceptance of our products and services by
a company that is an undisputed leader in its field of activity
that, as always, has thoroughly checked all the available alternatives
prior to the final selection of SUMMA as its strategic partner in technology
related matters.

NCR SURVEY SHOWS U.S. CONSUMERS STILL VALUE PERSONAL
TOUCH IN BANKING
Banking by Personal
Computer Is Popular Among Customers on the Internet
Americans may
have learned to bank by ATM, phone, and home computer, but an old-fashioned
visit to the teller window is still the most popular way to complete
a transaction, according to survey results released by NCR Corporation
today.
"This survey makes it
clear that people appreciate the sense of security and personal
interaction that teller transactions offer," said Per-Olof
Loof, senior vice president of NCR's Financial Solutions Group, which supplies banks with customer-oriented
solutions ranging from ATMs to data warehouses and branch automation
systems. "If banks want their customers to accept new technologies,
then they must preserve that personal touch through their interactive
offerings," Loof said.
Highlights of the survey include:
73 percent of people make deposits
via a bank teller.
62 percent use ATMs.
48 percent telephone their bank at least once a month.
45 percent still visit a bank teller at least three times a month.
11 percent use a personal computer to do banking.
Overall, the survey showed
that teller transactions are still the most popular way to bank,
followed by ATMs, telephone banking, and computer banking. However,
computer banking did make a strong showing given the number of American
homes connected to the Internet. Nearly half of the 25 percent of
Americans with online access at home use their computer for banking.
"Perhaps the reason why
banking via PC is catching on is because it is personal. It's information
and services tailored to consumers' particular needs," said
Loof. "A majority of people we surveyed said that they wanted
companies to have a 'personal relationship' with them, but they
didn't express a strong preference for interacting with a human
as opposed to a machine. It's the 'personal' part that seems to
matter to them," he said.
"Banks have traditionally
used new technologies to save money and for efficiency. But if they
want people to actually use those technologies comfortably, it's
crucial to make sure that it's seamless, and personal," Loof
added. The survey was carried out for NCR by BMRB International,
an independent research firm, which polled 1,237 adults in the USA
by telephone.
SIGNIFICANT BUSINESSES CLOSED BY SUMMA
SISTEMAS, C.A. IN 1998
1.0.-
FINANCIAL SECTOR
1.1.- SELF
SERVICE
- This sector
of the market is oriented to providing the
necessary tools to achieve that bank customers go
fewer times to the teller windows and rather
perform their normal transactions (such as
withdrawals, consulting balances, transfers
between accounts that represent the great
majority of transactions) using the electronic
equipment that can attend customers in a fast,
convenient and reliable manner.
- Among the
electronic equipment offered by
SUMMA SISTEMAS to this sector of the market, we
have:
- Automatic Teller
Machines
- Check Dispensers
- Express Deposits
- Kiosks
and
during 1998 this sector was extraordinarily active.
- Specifically
in the line of Automatic Teller Machines the
market practically doubled its installed base and
among the most outstanding successes of SUMMA
SISTEMAS is having been selected by Banco
Mercantil as its primary supplier of
this equipment for the years 1999 and 2000.
Important deals were also signed with Banco
de Venezuela, with Banco
Caracas and
with the Reunidas chain which
comprises several
Savings and Loan associations of the country.
1.2 DOCUMENTS
AND IMAGES PROCESSING
- This sector
of the market is oriented to the automation of
the bank processes to codify, classify, balance
and "compensate" the checks they
handle. These are processes that have to be
carried out within very specific timeframes and
require very complex logistics to be completed in
time. The new tendency is to "capture the
image" of the check and achieve that the
electronic image "travel" instead of
the physical check.
- Precisely in
the field of images SUMMA
SISTEMAS has achieved outstanding
success upon contracting with Keon
Venezuela the full system of images
(capture of signatures, transport, LAN network,
PC, scanners, Laser printers) for Banco
Provincial; this installation is the
first in Latin America and in the world, outside
the United States, using this technology under
Windows NT.
1.3.- FINANCIAL
PLATFORM
- Refers to the
equipment and applications that financial
institutions use to maintain the centralized
information of their customer base, allowing at
the same time to access the different
applications needed to consult and/or update it
in order to carry out the transactions required
by the customers, such as current accounts,
savings accounts, loans, etc.
- SUMMA
SISTEMAS closed an important deal with Banco
de Comercio Exterior
for the full implementation of the COBIS
application.
2.0.-
RETAIL SALES SECTOR
2.1.- SUPERMARKETS
- MAKRO
Comercializadora confirmed
its confidence in NCR
equipment and SUMMA SISTEMAS service upon
completing the installation of its store in
Maracay with NCR equipment similar to that it
already has in the rest of its stores in the
country.
2.2.-
SPECIALTY STORES
- Farvenca and the Farmahorros
chain of 180 pharmacies at national level
automate their points of sale with NCR equipment
and the SUPERPOS application.
NCR HELPS 7-ELEVEN STORES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES
BUILD STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS WITH CONSUMERS
Enhancing its ability to serve
the needs of convenience-oriented consumers, 7-Eleven, Inc. has partnered
with NCR Corporation for a store information system solution now being
installed in more than 5,000 7-Eleven convenience stores throughout
the United States.
"We have an aggressive strategy
to install a system-wide retail information system unique to 7-Eleven,"
said Clark Matthews, 7-Eleven's president and CEO. "Ultimately,
this strategy will connect each 7-Eleven store to accounting centers,
corporate headquarters, fresh-food production facilities, combined
distribution centers, warehouse grocery distributors and other vendors,
and provide a fully integrated enterprise wide ordering
system.
NCR and other partners worked
with us to design the solution we need to take us where we want to
be, and to implement that solution in a timely manner."
NCR teamed with ACS Retail Solutions,
Inc. and EDS to develop a customized convenience store solution for
7-Eleven, encompassing software, hardware, networking, and implementation
services. The new system has been installed in more than 3,000 7-Eleven
stores to date, and is expected to be running in 5,000-plus locations
by the end of 1999.
"7-Eleven is enabling its
stores to access more accurate and timely information so they can
improve supply chain management and order what customers want to buy,"
said Mike Koehler, NCR's vice president of Retail Solutions in the
Americas. "In short, this solution is helping 7-Eleven build
stronger customer relationships with each and every customer transaction."
At the checkout, 7-Eleven's new
systems include Intel-based NCR 7453 retail point-of-service (POS)
workstations with enhanced color touch-screen displays designed to
reduce cashier training time. In addition, an NCR in-store processor
is being upgraded in the back office of each store.
Fuel pumps and a credit authorization
system are integrated with the POS systems. A local area network in
each store provides a link to the store operations system to streamline
the collection of cash and sales data for daily reporting. The 7-Eleven
stores are connected to host systems via an ISDN network for transmission
of sales information, merchandise orders and credit authorization
requests.
NCR is managing the entire rollout
process, which includes staging and installation services, for quick,
effective implementation.
"We're currently installing
this solution in 7-Eleven locations at a rate of up to 150 stores
a week," Koehler added. "NCR's experience and strong record
of success in managing activities of this type for large retail chains
is helping assure a smooth rollout with little disruption to store
operations and, most important, no inconvenience to 7-Eleven customers."
As installation of each store
is completed, NCR begins providing on-site maintenance of NCR and
third-party products under a multi-year retail store support services
contract.

June 1999
NCR Awarded $67 Million Contract Extension by U.S: Postal
Service for Retail Solution to rapidly expand Services to Consumers
Washington,
D.C.- NCR Corporation announced today that
the United States Postal Service (USPS) has awarded the company a
$67 million Stage hA Point-of-Service ONE (POS ONE) contract extension
that will enable the Postal Service to continue to rapidly expand
the services it offers at retail customer windows. As options are
exercised by the USPS, the Stage hA program would approach a $176
million contract value.
POS ONE is a major USPS initiative
to replace current retail systems with state of the art hardware
and software, along with professional and support services and training.
The program is focused on providing consumers with faster service
and better information, and will make the Postal Service competitive
with commercial mail services.
NCR, along with IBM, was previously
awarded the first Stage of the POS ONE contract; the largest roll-out
of retail terminals in the nation. The three stage POS ONE program
calls for 73~000 POS terninals to be deployed in 20,000 postal retail
units. The new retail systems will replace the more than 63,000
outdated retail terminals.
The first Stage rollout of
NCR systems began in Ashland, VA., in January, 1998 and has extended
to more than 1,000 post offices in the United States to date. Completion
of the entire program is expected within the next five years.
As the Stage Two POS terminals
are put in place, consumers will be able to get better information
about available mail services and spend less time at the postal
service window. For example, consumers will have fast access to
all delivery options and costs to make quick, informed decisions.
Paying for mail services and products will become easier with automated,
online check and debit/credit
card authorization. And, improved inventory management will enable
the USPS to keep popular consumer products - such as special issue
or commemorative stamps - on hand in the proper amount at the location
needed.
And, postal customers will
now also be able to get faster, simpler service for transactions
such as refilling postage meters, paying C.O.D.'s, opening and renewing
post office boxes, paying consumers, purchasing money orders and
applying for passports.
"We are very excited about
helping the Postal Service turn improved transactions into better
relationships with consumers," said Van H. Aggelakos, president
of NCR's Government Systems Corp. "The new systems will enable
the Postal Service to dramatically improve customer service by automating
manual processes and simplifying transactions, while providing detailed
transaction information to USPS management for better decision-making."
The Stage IIA POS ONE deployment
includes 3,500 each of
the following NCR products:
- Pentium -based retail workstations
with DynaKey'TM, a user interface that integrates a color flat
screen active-matrix display with a numeric keypad, function keys
and magnetic strip reader, for simplified and quick processing
of mail transactions;
- Electronic signature capture
devices that reduce costs by decreasing paper record keeping and
storage, and by simplifying information retrieval;
- Omni-directional presentation
scanners for fast, accurate bar code scanning of postal products,
delivery confirmation, as well as bulky or heavy products at the
service window;
- and Thermal printers for
printing crisp, legible receipts more quickly than impact printers;
and these printers are used to print money orders and other Postal
forms right at the service window.
As part of Stage IIA, NCR will
integrate third party products such as Microsoft Windows NT operating
system for flexibility and scalability; Sybase SQL Anywhere database
for data storage and report generation; WeighTronix scales for accurate
weighing of packages; Cash Drawers from Cash Bases; and keyboards
from Cherry Corporation.
NCR and the Postal Service
anticipate further implementation of Stage IIA in the coming months,
including orders for application software. In addition, NCR's worldwide
professional and customer services organizations will be performing
program management, application customizing, systems integration,
full staging and implementation, lifecycle support, and training
during the POS ONE deployment.

NCR WORLDWIDE LEADER FOR 12th
CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN ATMs
NCR Corp., the
World Leader in banking self service, delivered record
46.509 ATMs to customers worldwide in 1998, representing
a 10% increase over 1997 delivering 42.440 units.
"Our 1998
results solidified our position as the worlds
leading supplier of ATMs for the 12th
consecutive year" said Per-Olof Loof, Senior Vice
President of NCRs Financial Solutions Group.
"Our strong global performance is the result of our
unique global distribution and superior solution
offerings".
ATMs are a
cornerstone of NCRs strategy of transforming
transactions into relationships for the financial
industry. NCR not only helps companies serve their
customers at the point of transaction, such as ATMs, but
also through a virtual circle of interacting, connecting,
knowing and relating to customers.
NCR can help banks
collect and analyze information generated by an ATM
transaction to help identify potential products and
consumer services. This can turn isolated transactions
into ongoing relationships of ever-greater value and
trust. Instead of one market of millions.
NCR products and solutions can help clients discover
a million markets of one.
